I caught some ST:TNG on Spike in the last couple of days. It surprised me how much I still loved seeing Mark Leonard & Patrick Stewart. What didn't surprise me was how annoying I still find Troi. My first reaction to her years ago was 'what is that bimbo doing on a starship?' and I still feel that way. Which is wierd cause Trek wouldn't be Trek without the bimbos. Maybe it's because they tried to convice us she had a real job or because She seemed less empathic than your average Vulcan? I truely dislike the character and I could never pinpoint the exact reason. I loved Uhura and some of the first fic I ever wrote featured Spock/Uhura. I liked Crusher fine and I always felt a little betrayed by the moments of Crusher, Trio friendship on the show, it was like the writers were trying to convice people this woman could make a friend. TNG isn't my favorite Trek but I guess I like it better than I thought if it's still getting me thinking.
What I like least about the show is I only have to think about the characters it's a little too cut and dry over what the viewer should think storylines. In some ways I think that TNG is Gene ficcing Trek. h's fixing what he thought he got wrong with the first show. It comes off as bland because he's trying so hard to make the universe so perfect. This is hardly new insight to anyone who has seen the show. I actually like his Mary Sue though, Wesley never made me grit my teeth.
