janedavitt for the beta.
“So, I’ve been thinking, Lindsey…” Xander had a beseeching look in his eye that always meant Lindsey was going to learn to love doing something he hated.
“Funny but I didn’t smell any smoke.”
“Hey, I’m the comedian in this relationship - stick to being the stra- Hmm, as I was saying, Valentine’s day is coming up and now that we’re all settled here I was thinking we should do something special.”
Yep he was right. “What? Not another theme park trip.”
“You had fun.” Xander insisted. “I had something else in mind though and I’m not sure if you’ll like the idea.”
“I enjoy life with you, because of you. I’m pretty sure whatever you want to do will be great.”
“This place is has a lot of room and a big yard, no Hellmouth and only one semi-evil lawyer. There’s only one thing missing.”
“What’s that?”
“I never thought I say this considering how I grew up but I’d like to add to our family.”
“What!”
“A puppy. What’s the matter, don’t you like dogs?”
“One of these days you’ll give me a heart attack.”
“Yeah, when you are very, very old and horny.”
“You’re probably right. What kind of dog were you thinking of? Not a fussy little thing I hope.”
Xander shook his head no.“ But I don’t want anything like a Rottweiler or a German shepherd either:just a dog. An everyday kind of pup; you know - a doggy me.”
Easygoing, loyal, smart, funny, hardworking, loving, about as everyday as a diamond, “Well, we can’t find a breeder until we know what breed you want.”
“Why can’t we just go to the pound?”
“Because then you can be sure of the health and temperament of the animal.”
“But you can be sure you’re saving a life.”
“You’re always trying to rope me into saving the world.”
“I could never have pets before. This is what I want to do for Valentine’s Day.”
“All right, we’ll look but we’re not making any snap decisions, OK?”

Five years later
“I think I’ve lost my dog.” Lindsey said with a smile as he looked at the sleeping border-collie mix. He and Jack had bonded right away at the pound but Lindsey wasn’t at all upset that the dog had found a new best buddy.
“He was supposed to be my dog, remember.”
“What can I say except he was so Xander-like I fell in love?”
“This thing you have for guys with one eye is very strange but don’t get over it on my account. Not disappointed that we didn’t go to a breeder for this one either?” Xander said softly, gazing at the sleeping child.
Lindsey shook his head no even though he knew the question was rhetorical. Tabitha was two years old and had mild cerebral palsy and the second that he had met her Lindsey knew she would be theirs. “She’s beautiful and sweet as an ice cream sundae.”
“Yeah, kind of looks like one too, with all those caramel colored ringlets and her little milk chocolate face.” Xander had the same grin on his face that Lindsey was most likely wearing.
“Happy Valentine’s Day Xander.”
“You too Lins.”
“And thanks for roping me into saving the world again, Xander.”
